Spinning ClassToday was my first of many enjoyable and painful spinning classes at Vivre, a small gym in Palo Alto.  I went with a friend who was also a novice but was determined to stick it out the entire 60 minutes of bike-sprinting that we endured.

Spinning often creates a love-hate relationship.  On the one hand, it is exhilirating, challenging, and an honest 500 calories burned in the hour of cycling.

On the other, you want to scream at the instructor to shut up or let you take a break for once.

In between the 5 minutes of pure thigh burn, there’s a glimpse that you’ll feel pretty good at the end of this, but we’re far too interested in immediate gratification.

If you’ve never tried a spinning class, you will probably have one of two reactions at the end:  that was awesome and I will be back next week – or – never again. Spinning classes usually encourage a series of “running” and “sprinting” intervals where you turn up or down the resistance level on the bike.  There’s a lot more to it than just peddling.  Having good form and endurance is paramount to a successful spinning experience.

Many small gyms will offer a free group class or guest passes as part of regular membership.  If you’ve never given spinning class a try, you should try it just once.  Bring plenty of water and wear spandex shorts/pants to avoid them riding up.

CrunchesToday I started the famous P-90X work out series (before and after pictures to come soon!).  I did the chest and back 1-hr workout by myself, but invited a friend over for the 20-minute ab ripper work out.  It was nearly impossible, but so much better with a friend.

Working out with a friend keeps you motivated and encourages you to FINISH.

Are you a frequent snacker?  Like vegging out in front of the TV with a bag of chips or carton of ice cream? Portion Control Then you’re like most women, and it can be a difficult habit to break.

However, women who snack out of small bowls usually eat at least 25% fewer calories then women who eat straight from the container.  Rather than devour an entire bag of chips, pour the chips into a small bowl and allow yourself to only eat that amount.  Pouring into bowls sets boundaries for yourself, and deters you from getting up to re-fill.

For items you’re used to pouring into large bowls (pasta, cereal, ice cream), try using a smaller bowl.  See if you’re full after eating a smaller portion before going back for more.  And as always, combine any snack with a full glass of water.  If you ever eat because you’re thirsty or bored, this will help to block unwanted calories.

Healthy Green Tea Diet

Green Tea

Are you a big coffee person?  Drink at least 2 cups per day?

Kick the habit by substituting one of your cups of coffee for a cup of Green Tea.  It’s an inexpensive, healthy alternative and it still has enough caffeine to get you through the morning.  Consuming too much caffeine can lead to heart problems, insomnia, changes in your metabolism, anxiety, nervousness, and other health problems.   Switch one of your cups for Green Tea this week and try both cups of Green Tea the next.  Once your body adjusts to the change, you won’t need coffee anymore.

The Loving Hut is an organic vegan cafe with multiple locations on the West Coast and Florida.  Displayed in the restaurants are pictures of famous celebrity vegans and vegetarians as well as literature and information on the vegan lifestyle.   The food is delicious – sandwiches, salads, desserts, and of course tapioca tea made especially with soy milk (bubble or boba tea).

I recommend the rice spring rolls.  Made with rice noodles, soy, and lots of veggies, they’re suitable for those with lactose intolerance or Celiac Disease (gluten free wraps!).  They also offer lots of choices for those going “raw vegan” or not eating anything vegan cooked over 118 degrees.

They also offer gluten free and lactose free versions of some of your favorite foods including fettucine, Shephard’s Pie, Cheesecake, and even ICE CREAM!  Lactose free ice cream?  Soy ice cream??  It’s so much more delicious than what you’ll find at the grocery store.  Go there with friends, on a date, or just by yourself.
